The Breton Museum was established by the Breton and District Historical Society in 1986. In 2006 the museum became an Alberta Museums Association Recognized Museum.
Since 1987 the museum has operated out of the current building next to the Breton Elementary School. The building that the museum operates out of was originally a two room school that was built in Breton circa 1948. It was used for many years for Breton's Grade 1 and 2 classes, and is one of the oldest buildings in Breton still in its original location.
