Black History
Some of the first settlers in the Breton area were African Americans from states such as Oklahoma and Kansas, which were becoming increasingly discriminatory in the early 1900s. Keystone, as the settlement here was called, was one of four such communities in Alberta. Most of the descendants of these families may have moved on from the community, but their legacy lives on.
The Breton Museum celebrates its Black History. Our collected artifacts, historical records and museum exhibits trace the rich contributions of black settlers to our community. The Historical Society has worked to restore the Keystone Cemetery where many of these settlers are buried. We also host a Black History Month event every year which many of the original families attend.
