About the Breton And District Historical Society
Our mission is to preserve our past for future generations.
The Breton and District Historical Society formed in 1978 for the purpose of publishing a community history book as a way of celebrating Alberta's 75th anniversary and to document the local history before the original settlers all passed away. The result of this effort was The Ladder of Time, which was released in 1980.
The next project taken on by the Historical Society was the restoration of the Keystone Cemetery. This was the cemetery that was used by the Black families who first settled the area but it been largely neglected for many years. The Historical Society, feeling that it was historically significant, cleaned up the site and installed a new cairn and commemorative plaque.
In 1986, the Historical Society began to consider the possibility of creating a museum. By 1987, we had begun to lease the two room school that we still operate out of today. With the establishment of the museum, the objectives of the Historical Society, which had originally been the history book, shifted to the museum's operation and the preservation of the Keystone Cemetery. Since then, the museum had continued to evolve and so too has the Historical Society along with it. We continue to learn more about the local stories and how best to preserve and share them with the next generation.
