Lumber Industry
Believe it or not, one of the most important industries in Breton's early years was the lumber industry.
Logging near Breton began around 1907, when contractors working for John Walter and D. R. Fraser set up operations to fell trees and then send them downriver to Edmonton. In 1926 with the arrival of the railroad, D. R. Fraser moved their full operations out to Breton and over the next few decades many other lumber companies formed and operated in the area. This lasted until the mid-1950s, when there was little remaining timber and these companies ceased operations in the area.
The Breton Museum has many artifacts, displays, and photographs documenting this important part of our history. Visit us to learn more!
