Agricultural History
Agriculture has been a key industry of the Breton area ever since the first settlers arrived early in the 20th century, and remains so today.
Many people moving into the area early on came to homestead. Early farming was particularly difficult due to the soil type and many struggled to make something of their quarters until the University of Alberta acquired land from the Flesher family in 1929 to use as research plots. The research and techniques developed at the Breton Plots helped the local farmers immensely and many families have continued farming in the area to this day.
Visit the museum for more information about our agricultural history and to see our homesteader's cabin!
